living beautifully with a broken heart | the loss of a child
I tend to photograph a lot of love between humans. births, pregnancy, engagements, weddings. these are happy moments that are worth celebrating with art — memories encapsulated. but what about the times full of grief? they are just as important, and not as often captured and shared. as a culture, we’re not encouraged to delve into these heavy feelings. yet the growth and evolution that comes through navigating the darkness is endless.
steph emailed me with a unique request, they had lost her baby hannah a year and a half earlier, and wanted to document this stage of life. steph had been sifting through new discoveries, finding empowerment as a woman, embracing grief, and wanted to document the delicate and tender journey they had been on.
steph flew me out to oahu, where I got to spend 2 days learning more about the path they’d been on. and photographed what came up through their story. I listened and learning about hannah. about the heartbreak that goes along with losing a child. but also witnessed the immeasurable amount of love and strength that comes with it.

thank you to steph and doug for trusting me to document this moment in your beautiful unfolding story.
